Vivotek IP8161 è un network camera high-end da 2 megapixel, con triplice codec per la compressione H.264, MPEG-4 e MJPEG con funzioni giorno e notte pensata per spazzi ampi ed aperti come ingressi di palazzi e aeroporti, oppure applicazioni che richiedano un'accurata identificazione come volti umani nelle banche o targhe di veicoli nei parcheggi. La risoluzione avanzata da 2 megapixel (1600 x 1200) fornisce immaggini dettagliate e cattura scene più larghe di una normale videocamera CCTV.
Questo permette di ridurre i costi di messa in opera impiegando una sola videocamera megapixel al posto di diverse con risoluzione VGA. Per fornire una qualità di immagine superiore nell'arco delle 24 ore la vidoecamera viene fornita con un filtro IR-cut incorporato e rimovibile per il funzionamento in luce infrarossa ed un obiettivo auto-iris che si adatta ai frequenti cambi di luce. Supporta il cosidetto tamper detection che avvisa lo staff della sicurezza qualora la videocamera venga oscurata, sfuocata, ricoperta da vernice o coperta. La videocamera incorpora un anello di regolazione che migliora la compatibilità con le ottiche con attacchi CS fornendo agli installatori flessibilità nelle diverse applicazioni. Lo storage on-board per registrazioni temporanee è costituito da uno slot per memorie SD/SDHC. Le funzioni avanzate prevedono la conformità 802.3af PoE, audio a due vie con protocollo SIP e trasmissioni con criptazione HTTPS.
